Owner Review: Mondaine SBB CFF FFS – One of the most recognisable faces in Europe

This is probably one of the most recognisable faces in Europe. (Much like tintin, more on that later.) A clock adorned on railway stations from France to Italy, which millions of commuters and Eurorail pass hedonists glance up at to make sure they catch their next train. Unsurprisingly this familiar face lends itself quite successfully to a wristwatch.

Combining functionally focused elements with expected Swiss made precision (check out that crown) this Mondaine classic has nostalgia oozing from its press case back and drilled lugs. (A wise decision as this can take a variety of strap styles.)

Within the somewhat narrow design language that translates well down the various available sizes, there is sure to be one that suits you. But size is important as the void created by the white dial could become uncomfortable and overpowering if too big. So this watch deserves some restraint in order to appreciate it for what it is, and not resemble that clock you pulled down from its fixings while passing through Gare Saint Lazare. So choose the case size carefully.

You can’t help but tell the time with this watch, because of that high legibility and well proportioned handset -stemming from that original swiss railway clock – enhancing the design intent. I don’t care that its quartz. Being a fan of well designed products that focus on the practicality not the showmanship (to tell the time at a glance) makes this a feature I can overlook.

It’s not as gimmicky and trend driven as a swatch but colour variations across the range keep it fresh and just as fun. With that red lollipop seconds hand being the star. Giving this watch an endearing character that you can’t help but fall for. A bit like tintin really, always there for the good of the people, solving mysteries and going on train adventures with. (Obviously watches don’t solve mysteries.)
