Owner Review: Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award”

Omega Speedmaster "Silver Snoopy Award" 50th Anniversary

So here I am with another Fifth Wrist Review. It’s been a while since my last one, and frankly I don’t remember what my last review was on. Not that it matters, because I’m back today to review the Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary.

I wont go into the technical specs of the watch as you can Google this in a heartbeat. What I will go into is my experience with it during my ownership of the watch.

Having a cartoon character adorning a timepiece is a bit comical (pun intended) and even more so when we have collectors around the world frothing over it. We’re a strange bunch. Personally, Snoopy has been a cartoon character I grew up with and I’m quite fond of. Admittedly, I have other Snoopy items within the household and also introduced him to my kids, so wanting one of these watches was only natural regardless of hype.

The Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary wears well on my 6.5 inch wrist, and is very similar, if not the same as the standard Speedmasters around. However, I just had to swap out that nylon strap for a bracelet. Why you may ask? Simple – because the bracelet completes the look and feel of the watch. Why it didn’t come with a bracelet in the first place and include the fabric strap as part of the package confuses me (actually, I probably know why…).

Snoopy happily features on the sub dial at 9 o’clock, accompanied by the words ‘50th anniversary’ which I personally could do without as it would make for a cleaner look. Those who know me, I’m a sucker for white and blue color schemes, so that’s ticked. The Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary features a silver/white dial, blue markers, blue sub dials (fun fact, the blue on the Snoopy sub dial has a lighter shade of blue than the other 2) and blue chapter ring.

But what about the case back I hear you asking…

This is where the party is at and the most striking part of the Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary. I don’t really know how much effort or engineering it took to create this, but having Snoopy flying in a rocket across the moon, and having the Earth rotate is just brilliant. By animating Snoopy on the case back, it elevated the watch from just another Speedy to being the ‘one to have’. Every now and again, I find myself removing the watch off my wrist and activating the chrono function just to see the little guy fly around, why? Just because.

If you’re interested in one, the good news is that its technically not limited (we all know about this situation though…), I was once even told by the AD, ‘anyone who wants one, will eventually get one’ – a glimmer of hope for those who are interested. I don’t know how true that is, but all I can say is, I am grateful to be able to have one in the collection as I missed out on the original Silver Snoopy Award.
